- WHAT IS "W":
-
- W was originally written for a friend's teenage daughter who was
- seriously hurt in a auto accident and now only has use of one finger
- of one hand (we called it "W" to cut down on her key-strokes). We
- made all functions of the program "one key" functions (no Ctrl this or
- Alt that) because she could not press two keys simultaneously. The
- result is a simple "electronic typewriter" that allows her, and now
- you, to type, edit and print letters of up to around 50K bytes (this 3
- page document is under 7K, so you can see just how many pages you can
- actually write). We did not charge our friend for the development of
- this program so we are not charging you for it's use (if it's used for
- personal use only). If you are a business, government office or other
- commercial user, you MUST register @ $20 per user (site licenses are
- available). The program is Copyrighted and we do not authorize ANY
- modification or re-naming of W. We do grant individual FREE use of W
- and encourage you to copy it for YOUR friends.
-
- WHAT WILL "W" DO:
-
- W will save your letter for future use. W provides for multiple 59
- line pages. W does allow for editing. W does "Word Wrap". W does
- hold the letter until you tell it not to (if you want to send the
- same basic letter to several people, print the first copy, say "Y"
- when asked if you want to repeat the letter, make your name and
- address changes, print it, say "Y", etc., etc.).
-
- A recent change made to "W" makes it a very effective "ASCII Text
- Editor" (which means it can be used to make or edit straight ASCII
- text files such as Batch Files). The change is that we now strip off
- the "Soft" carriage return that is normally used in "Word Wrapping"
- and convert them to "Hard" carriage returns (as though you hit
- "Enter". The "ASCII" feature is activated if you elect to save a newì
- file as "ASCII" versus "FORMATTED" when asked to decide. So now youì
- have a word processor and a text editor.
-
-
- BASIC OPERATION
-
-
- Start W by entering W.
-
- W will ask you for a file name to bring in for editing, or you can
- just press 'Enter' to open a new file. If you want to edit a file,
- but do not remember the exact name you gave it, just press the 'F8'
- key and a list of your files will be displayed. Use the 'Up' and
- 'Down' Arrow keys to move the marker to the file you wish and then
- press the 'S' key to <S>elect it, or press the 'A' key to <A>bort
- using the list and return to the File Name Entry Screen. When in the
- File Name Entry Screen you may quit W and return to DOS by pressing
- 'Esc".
-
- If you have been using a prior version of W, your file names will not
- be displayed in the above "Select or Abort" screen because this new
- version holds the names in a database file (new documents will
- automatically be added to the database). To add your files to the
- database simply bring them up in 'Edit' mode and then 'Save' them.
- This will cause the file names to be added to the database. Or you
- can go into the "Select Abort" screen and press F2 and enter the
- file name and description. This method will not save the name of
- a file that does not exist in the same directory or floppy disk as
- "W".
-
- If you are starting a new document and you are now facing a blank box,
- you may start typing - W does do "word-wrapping", so you don't have
- to watch your line lengths (just start typing and W will automatically
- do carriage returns for you).
-
- W will scroll to new blank lines when you type to the bottom of the
- entry screen (a dynamic display at the top of the screen will tell
- you what Page, Line and Column you are at).
-
- If you see a mistake in a line already typed, use your arrow keys (up,
- down, left and right) to go to the error then press the "Insert" key,
- delete what is in error and type in the correction. If "Insert" is
- not used, anything you type in will "over-write" whatever is presently
- on the screen. With "Insert", what you type in will be "inserted"
- wherever the cursor is at. If you have "deleted" a word (or words)
- and the line length if off, just press F9 and the paragraph will be
- "reformed" to new line lengths. If you are adding words, and W senses
- that the line would be too long, W will automatically "reform" as you
- type.
-
- (NOTE: If you are editing a document previously saved in "ASCII"ì
- format, F9 will not reform a paragraph, but adding new words willì
- cause excessive line lengths to be "word wrapped".)
-
- The editing commands that you can use to move throught your letter
- are:
-
- Cursor Movement:
-
- Up one Line..................................Up Arrow
- Down one Line..............................Down Arrow
- Left one character.........................Left Arrow
- Right one character.......................Right Arrow
- Left one Word.............................^Left Arrow
- Right one Word...........................^Right Arrow
- Beginning of current Line........................Home
- End of current Line...............................End
- Beginning of Letter.............................^Home
- End of Letter....................................^End
- Window Up........................................PgUp
- Window Down......................................PgDn
-
- Editing Keys:
-
- Finish editing/writing(saves data)................F10
- Abort editing/writing (does not save data)........Esc
- Delete current line................................^Y
- Delete word right..................................^T
- Reform paragraph...................................F9
-
- When you have finished your letter, press F10. If the letter is a
- "new" letter (not in the database), you will be first asked if the
- letter is to be saved as "FORMATTED" or "ASCII". "FORMATTED" will
- preserve all the "soft" carriage returns and allow for future ease
- in re-editing the letter. Select "ASCII" to convert the letter
- into a pure "ASCII FILE" with hard carriage returns (necessary
- in batch files and/or program files). Next you will be asked to
- give your letter a name (up to 8 characters plus a period (.) and
- up to 3 more characters). Now you will be asked to enter a short
- description of the contents (this will help you later when you
- can't remember what you called the letter to aunt Ethel).
- Lastley, a "Command Box" will appear.
-
- Press "P" to print your letter.
-
- Press "E" to edit it (you will be placed back at the top of the
- letter).
-
- If you want to delete a file (you must first bring the file
- up on the screen and then you press "D" for delete. You will be asked
- to confirm that you wish to the delete the file and then it will be
- gone.
-
- Press "Q" to Quit any further work on the file you are in and return
- to the File Name Entry Screen. If you press "Q", you will be asked if
- you want to save the file you have been working on. (If you press
- 'Esc' to get to this point, you will be returned to the FNES
- immediately. If F10 was press, you will be asked if you wish to save
- your file.) If YES, and the file is new and does not yet have a name,
- you will be asked to enter a name to save it under. Once you have
- returned to the FNES you may either enter a new file name to edit,
- start a new letter, or press 'Esc' to exit W and return to DOS.
-
- File names are a maximum of 8 characters plus an optional 3 character
- extension (ie, XXXXXXXX.XXX). Remember, if you use the 3 character
- extention, put a "period" between the file name and the extention (If
- you just enter 12 characters, instead of 8 + . + 3, the last 4
- characters will be dropped).
-
- If, after you first start W, you decide that you do not want to write
- a new letter or edit an old one after all, press "Esc" and you will be
- jumped back to the File Name Entry Screen where you can either enter
- another file name to edit, press Enter to start a new file, or press
- Esc to return to DOS.
-
- If you press "P" and your printer is not "on-line", the program will
- "beep" and ask you to put your printer on-line and press any key to
- continue. W will print your letter in 60 line pages. When the
- document has been printed, you will be asked if you want to "Repeat".
- If you answer "Y", you will be placed back to line 1 of the document
- just printed. You can use this mode to send the same letter to several
- different people, but with their names and address on it. If you
- answer "N" when asked if you want to Repeat, you will be asked if you
- want to save the file. If YES, and you have not previously named the
- file, you will be asked to do so. You will then be placed back in a
- blank edit screen to begin a new letter (press 'Esc' to quit and
- return to DOS).
-
- There you are, an eletronic typewriter that allows editing and
- multiple copies of a document, and "stores" your letter for future
- use. Quick, simple and easy to use with just one finger.
